Insomnia hypnosis for when you can't get to sleep.
We have all had a sleepless night at some time or another, it is horrible when you can't get to sleep.Laying there watching the clock, the hours and minutes tick by, just longing to go to sleep. Insomnia can be caused by many things, stress at work, a traumatic experience, loss or a loved one or an illness. Most of the time when the temporary cause subsides we can get back to a normal sleep pattern but sometimes it is still very difficult to get a good night's sleep.
The problem is that being unable to get to sleep causes anxiety, stress and even a dread of not being able to sleep. We will then fear going to bed and not being able to get to sleep. We may start to leave it later before going to bed because we think if we are more tired it will be easier to get to sleep. It is also likely that we will start many rituals, like not eating some foods or drinking some drinks of an evening.
Unfortunately, we often find that making all these changes makes sleeping no easier, in fact it gets even harder. This can be because making all these changes means we focus on not sleeping for a very large part of the day and doing this makes us anxious and stressed. When eventually we go to bed the anxiety we feel about not sleeping makes it very hard to get to sleep. The longer we lay awake the more the anxiety grows, it is this cycle that may make us not get to sleep for most of the night. Then should we wake in the middle of the night for any reason, the anxiety that we may not be able to get to sleep can stop us drifting off again.
